Customer demand for more tailored services and products, coupled with a personalized customer journey, is closing the distance between companies and their customers. This ongoing trend fueled by ease of information access has also provided companies with a unique opportunity in certain industries to capitalize on an individual’s desire for exclusivity. However, moving from a world of mass production and few, substitutable materials and components to single unit manufacturing and large article variety brings both challenges and opportunities for today’s supply chains. Whereas previous articles in this series shed light on the effect on production and procurement, this article will take a closer look at implications for the logistics function.
