"Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in Challenging Times"
Impact of the Corona crisis on the development of a new industry
The Urban Air Mobility industry has set ambitious goals for the new decade: Starting as early as 2023, German and European tech companies aspire to offer urban mobility services in the third dimension – so-called "air taxi" services – in the first mega cities worldwide. They plan to use new types of electrically powered, vertical take-off and landing aircrafts (eVTOL), which will ultimately be able to fly completely autonomously and transport passengers "on demand" between landing points within the large metropolises. The pioneers in this new market, mainly start-ups from Germany, China and the United States, have now reached advanced stages of development and testing. Even established global players from the aviation and automotive industries are already active in this new market.
